Labor Day – A Day Off!

posted on September 1st, 2011, by Rich. Comments Off posted so far.

The benefits of a day off.

Here at Baudry Therapy Center we’re always encouraging our clients to reach for their goals. This usually means more hard work, more exercise, and more committments. We all know that this is what it takes to accomplish anything worthwhile. We are honored to be a part of your success stories. But in addition to all of the hard work put in, time off is absolutely necessary for success. A day off allows our bodies to recover, re-charges our energy, and renews our spirit.

This weekend brings Labor Day. A national holiday celebrating hard working Americans since 1882. Use this day to take a break. Whether it is physically, or mentally, take the time to re-fill the tank, to relax, and have some fun.

Here are 3 reads for Labor day.

National Women’s Health Week

posted on May 10th, 2011, by editor. Comments Off posted so far.

The U.S. Government has named May 8-14th National Women’s Health Week.  We didn’t think one week was enough time to celebrate women, so Baudry Therapy Center has named the entire month of May Women’s Health Month!

Baudry Therapy Center encourages all of our women to visit their Physician for a regular check-up. This month only, we’re offering free health screens to all women.  Come in and find out why your elbow hurts, why your back is stiff in the morning, or how to lose weight. It only takes 20 minutes.  Take a little time out for yourself and call us to set up your free health screening. You deserve it!

In addition to checking up with your doctor, try some of these ideas to live a healthier you:

  1. Get organized. Spend time planning your daily or weekly calendar.
  2. Learn more about diet and proper nutrition.
  3. Treat yourself to a spa day.
  4. Come to Baudry to find the right exercise program for you.

Your family relies on you so much.  You enrich the lives around you. You make things special. You owe it to yourself to stay healthy. If you don’t want to do it for yourselves do it for your family. They need you.

All of us have special women in our lives. These women take care of us and put us in front of their own needs. As an extended Mother’s Day gift to your mom, encourage her to stay healthy!

Experience Crescent City Classic

There is a lot of buzz about Crescent City Classic this week.  The famous annual race is held the Saturday before Easter Sunday.  People come from far and wide to participate in this great event for many reasons: in honor of a loved one, to run their first race, or just another excuse to have a great time New Orleans style…you name the reason, that’s why people participate in the Crescent City Classic!

I look at the Crescent City Classic as a time to celebrate. I enjoy running with friends and family. We celebrate our ability to run and enjoy each others company along the way. It’s great to get out there and enjoy exercising with 1,000’s of fellow New Orleans natives.

Race prep starts a day or two before the event with some hydration; I drink plenty of water the day before and day of the race. I try to eat balanced meals with fruits and vegetables. I make plans with friends for driving, pickups, etc. The day of the event I have a light breakfast, make sure my socks are on and shoes laced up right…now I’m race bound and ready to experience the Crescent City Classic!

The “cattle” are herded into position.  There is a light buzz of chatter and excitement at the starting line.

As the race begins you try not to trip over someone, or their cooler, while bouncing off other runners and having a great time. You try very hard to stay with your friends, getting distracted by fun costumes at times. I love it! Easing into the run, reaching a steady pace. I don’t try to race as there is not much of a point to that. If you are competing for time, you should run somewhere else as this race is for you to enjoy all of the hard work you’ve put in training day-in and day-out. So, there is really no pressure to perform and you really don’t even think about running. You’re enjoying the people around you, the music from the sidelines, and the many sights of runners in costume. You see short and tall, skinny and not so skinny but mostly you see enjoyment.  Crescent City Classic is a race for everyone.

Crescent City Classic after party makes the day’s event even more fun by providing a festival type atmosphere. Jambalaya, cold beer and live music. It’s awesome!!!  Everyone has that euphoric post run feeling.  The crowd is full of energy, relaxed, and living in the moment. For a short time, there are no thoughts of the stress of work and responsibilities that need to get done.

That’s what I like about the Crescent City Classic. I hope you come out this year to join us and enjoy this classic event.

What’s your favorite Crescent City Classic experience?

Spring is here, the grass on the course is growing and it’s Master’s week! If you are not excited about playing golf, then you are not a golfer.

So in looking to get back to the course, the question becomes what should you do to get ready to play golf?

Simple answer…get involved with Titleist’s MyTPI golf fitness program. Over the 10 plus years I’ve been doing golf fitness no other program has even come close to providing the amount of knowledge and expertise as Titleist’s.  Their system of evaluation and training is the best I’ve seen as it explains how your specific physical abilities affect your golf swing and provides a clear training plan to maximize your ability to play golf.

Golf is a sport for a lifetime. You deserve to enjoy and play it well. Come see us for your very own Golf FIT program.

Exercise and Productivity

posted on March 1st, 2011, by Rich. Comments Off posted so far.

By Rich Baudry PT, DPT, OCS

Have you ever noticed when you are slow at work your energy as well as efficiency and productivity levels suffer; conversely, when you are busy you manage to perform much more effectively with greater efficiency. Sometimes doing more begets doing more and with exercise there is no exception.

Our bodies basically respond to the challenge or lack of challenge we put on them. The majority of Americans are under challenged physically throughout their day. We sit too much, eat too much, and often don’t treat our bodies well at all. As a result, we get weak, tight and lazy. Adding exercise challenges the body to get stronger; the stronger our body is the better it  performs.

There are many studies to support the benefits of exercise on productivity. In an article published by Work in 2009, H. Tamim demonstrates how attending Tai Chi class twice a week was been shown to improve resting heart rate, waist circumference, grip strength, and psychological well-being in female computer users. (1)

“Having energy or alertness is primarily controlled by hormones,” says Baudry Therapy Center’s Exercise Physiologist Tim Allerton MS, CPT, EP. “During exercise a tremendous amount of epinephrine and norepinephrine are released into our blood stream. Norepinephrine reaches the nerve fibers of our brains and increases wakefulness. Epinephrine has a tremendous effect on our metabolism. Exercise also releases beta-endorphins which bond with the opioid receptors of our brain to promote feelings of well being and relaxation.  The effects of this hormonal change can last for hours after a bout of exercise!”

In another journal article, MT Pedersen shows decreases in systolic blood pressure, percent of body fat, shoulder and neck pain, increases in muscle strength, and Oxygen uptake in two types of exercise groups over a one year controlled trial. (2)

Allerton adds, “From a physiological standpoint regular exercise has a positive effect on heart rate and blood pressure because of the adaptations of the heart muscle and peripheral vessels.  A bout of exercise will increase the heart rate to meet the demand of the activity. During this process the heart muscle grows stronger and ejects more oxygen-rich blood for every beat.  At rest, the demand of exercise is not present; however, the heart beats forcefully providing the body with enough blood, but with less beats.”

With the grind of work and family life, energy is at a premium. So if you are looking for more energy, less pain, or physiological well-being, add some exercise to your life. A little bit can go a long way.

Whether you start walking at lunch, visit the gym, or do some push ups at the office, I guarantee you will feel better and have more energy.

Team In Training: Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Fundraiser

posted on December 14th, 2010, by editor. Comments Off posted so far.

Baudry Therapy Center is proud to announce our sponsorship of our Physical Therapist, Taryn Cohn, in the 2011 Mardi Gras Marathon.  She is running to raise money on behalf of the Lukemia and Lymphoma Society as part of the Team In Training program.  Please take a moment to read Taryn’s message below.

As you may know, since moving to New Orleans I have made an annual tradition of participating in either the Mardi Gras Half or Full Marathon.  On February 13, 2011 I will be running for a reason much more important than the challenge of completing the race.  This year I was fortunate enough as a physical therapist to work with some runners who were training for the same race, but were participating on behalf of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in the Team In Training program.  This experience inspired my decision to also run and raise funds for this cause.

I am writing to ask for your assistance in my fundraising campaign.  I understand that this is a time of year when funds are often scarce, but any contribution would be greatly appreciated.  Each donation helps accelerate finding a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.  It is estimated that more than 957,000 Americans are battling these blood cancers.  Leukemia is the #1 disease killer of children and young adults under the age of 20.

Many of us have endured the far-reaching affects of cancer.  I would like to use this opportunity to run on behalf of my donors and the people who have touched their lives.  If you should choose to donate, include the individual’s name that inspired your contribution and I will write their name on a ribbon and proudly wear it on race day.

My goal is to raise $1,500 by January 21, 2011.  This money will be used for research, patient services and education.  Each donation is 100% tax deductible.  Please use the link in this email to donate online quickly and securely.  You can also use this link to track my progress.  You will receive confirmation of your donation by email and I will be notified as soon as you make your donation.

Click here to donate and Sponsor Taryn!

On behalf of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, thank you so much for your support and generosity!

With love and gratitude,

Taryn Cohn

P.S.  Please forward this to anyone you feel might be interested in making a donation.
