Calling all Women! Are you leading your families’ health movement? With health care in flux, proactive health solutions are becoming more and more important. And traditionally, women make the majority of the families’ health decisions. This article by Daphne Oz shows you how to get your family moving in the right direction.
“We’re eating too much, we’re eating too much of the wrong foods, we’re sedentary and we’re not educating our children on how to fix this,” McGrath said. “The only way you get control on health-care spending is to improve the underlying health conditions of our population.” says Matt McGrath, vice president of Holmes Murphy & Associates, (an insurance brokerage that performs employee benefits consulting). This article in the St Louis Business Journal discusses how our own behaviors are greatly responsible for the rising costs of health care, and provides prudent advice for how proactive wellness can help you control your health care costs.
Next in this Wall Street Journal article, see how this Dad changed his life by prioritizing his workouts. You can do it too!
Well I hope that these 3 articles inspire you to re-think your own health. Tell us what you think. How are you going to lead your own health movement?

And finally, this is a big one! According to a CBS News report, “Heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S., taking more than 631,000 lives each year, one in four deaths. It’s caused by plaque buildup in the coronary arteries which impedes blood flow, resulting in a potentially deadly heart attack.” Heart disease is a major health issue for men. The good news is that it doesn’t take much to DECREASE YOUR RISK of HEART DISEASE.

I’m not sure where the saying “if I were not laughing, I’d be crying” come from, or exactly what it means, but it must stem from the pain relieving effects of laughing. According to Robin Dunbar, an evolutionary psychologist at Oxford, the physical act of laughing, the simple muscular exertions involved in producing the familiar ha, ha, ha, he said, trigger an increase in endorphins, the brain chemicals known for their feel-good effect. So the next time you are suffering from pain and want to cry, find something to make you laugh, like funny movies, old times, or funny friends.
Habitual everyday postures can lead to many aches and pains. Improving your awareness of the postures you assume throughout the day can really help how you feel. Read about how everyday postures can affect you.

The benefits of a day off.
Here at Baudry Therapy Center we’re always encouraging our clients to reach for their goals. This usually means more hard work, more exercise, and more committments. We all know that this is what it takes to accomplish anything worthwhile. We are honored to be a part of your success stories. But in addition to all of the hard work put in, time off is absolutely necessary for success. A day off allows our bodies to recover, re-charges our energy, and renews our spirit.
This weekend brings Labor Day. A national holiday celebrating hard working Americans since 1882. Use this day to take a break. Whether it is physically, or mentally, take the time to re-fill the tank, to relax, and have some fun.
Here are 3 reads for Labor day.

Cardiovascular exercise is popular and certainly an important part of staying healthy. But are you getting the most out of your workouts on cardiovascular machines like the treadmill, elliptical or bike? This article provides good tips of form and strategies to efficiently burn more calories.
Recently, there has been much interest in nutrition and sports performance. And while there will always be questions about this topic, this article presents evidence and makes a good argument for the use of protein based drinks during and after exercise.
As a parent, how do you know when to take a child’s complaints seriously. We all know that kids can be dramatic, but you are better safe than sorry. Trust your instinct. When in doubt get it checked out. Here is a list of the signs and symptoms of a broken bone from the Mayo clinic:
- Severe pain, which may increase with movement
- Swelling
- Tenderness
- Bruising
- Obvious deformity, such as a bent arm or wrist
- Stiffness or inability to move your arm, wrist or elbow
- Inability to turn your arm from palm up to palm down or vice versa
When to see a doctor
If you have enough pain in your arm that you can’t use it normally, see a doctor right away. And do the same for your child. Delays in diagnosis and treatment of a broken arm can lead to poor healing.
And that concludes this week’s edition of Three for Thursday. As always, I’d love to hear what you think about it, ways to make it more valuable to you or maybe just your thoughts on today’s posts.

Here are this week’s health reads:
This youtube video (no reading!) from MyTPI discusses golf fitness exercises to help improve your ability to hit solid shots from uneven lies and from the bunker. Great tips- you should try them.
Exercise provides many benefits for those dealing with or surviving cancer. From a personal standpoint, I have seen this first hand in the clinic. Appropriate exercise for those dealing with cancer is uplifting, gives patients a sense of control, gives them something positive to do, promotes increased energy and better function.

Researchers show that 15 minutes of exercise a day can increase life expectancy by 3 years and decrease risk of death by 14%.
