5 Tips to Help You Beat the Heat

Exercising in the extreme heat of the New Orleans summer is NO JOKE!  Record-high temps can make outdoor workouts difficult, but also dangerous. But, there are plenty of ways you can keep exercising outside both safely and effectively. If you’re taking your workout outside, be sure to take these precautions when temperatures are high!

5 Tips to Help You Beat the Heat:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Don’t wait until you are thirsty, hydrate the night before and make sure you are continuing to drink fluids throughout the day. Limit caffeine intake because it can actually dehydrate you, increases the metabolic heat in the body, and increases the frequency of urination.
  2. Dress Appropriately: Invest in some wicking fabric that lets your body breathe easier and release the natural heat you build up during exercise.
  3. Avoid peak daylight hours: Plan to exercise in the early mornings or evenings to avoid the peak sun hours.  If your schedule only allows you to work out in the afternoon, invest in a gym with lots of air conditioning and showers.
  4. Slather Up: Always put on sunscreen, even if you’re only going to be outside for a few minutes. It’s suggested to wear at least 45 SPH to make sure your skin stays protected.
  5. Listen to your body: You know your better best. If you’re feeling light-headed, take a break. If you need to slow down, do it. Don’t worry about getting it done faster or setting a personal record. Take adequate rest and drink plenty of water. Most importantly, be aware of warning signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Hopefully, the high temps won’t last for too long – however, even a week or two of not being active can affect your health. Don’t let the heat be your excuse.  Make small modifications to your healthy routine during the higher temps, and you can keep your body moving forwards and not have the weather hold you back.  Give us a call if we can help you on your health journey!
