The “SIDE PLANK”

The side plank is a stability exercise that builds strength and endurance in your entire core, including your shoulder girdle, pelvis and hips.  It works the deep stabilizing muscles which are key to a healthy neck and back. The side plank will help keep you work and play harder with less nagging aches and pains. Take the Brio Fitness Challenge – June by tracking the number of minutes that you perform the side plank this month. come by Brio for a calendar to mark your progress. A strong core will help you feel and perform better in all you do.

Lie on your left side with your legs straight and feet stacked on top of each other.  Prop your upper body up on your left elbow and forearm.  Position your elbow under your shoulder.  Raise your hips until your body forms a straight line from your ankles to your shoulders.  Be sure that your head stays in line with your spine.  Try to hold this position for 30 seconds.  Turn around so that you’re lying on your right side and repeat.  For the beginner, bend your knees and do the plank from the knees to the elbow.
