Heat Prevention Tips
The blisteringly hot temperatures of summer are hard on all of us, but especially for those working and exercising outdoors. It can get dangerously hot so it is important to take precautions to keep yourself safe. Here are some Do’s and Don’ts to help prevent you from heat illness:
What NOT to do before working in the heat
- Eat large meals before going out in the heat: This may cause an upset stomach and contribute to heat illness.
- Drink caffeine, sugary drinks, and alcoholic beverages. All of these drinks cause the body to lose water and increase risk for heat related illnesses.
What you SHOULD do before working in the heat
- Hydrate the night before. Doing so will lessen your chance for heat illness the next day.
- Pay attention to your urine color: If it appears yellow or darker, you are in need of more water.
- Apply sunscreen.
