Sleep Well, Feel Well

Sleep Well, Feel Well

sleep wellSleeping is something that we do everyday, but have you ever thought about how sleep affects your overall health and wellness?

To learn more about the importance of sleep, I turned to developmental molecular biologist and author John Medina. In his book, Brain Rules, Medina talks about the reasons we sleep, the positive effects of sleep, and what we lose when we don’t get enough sleep.

Here are a few highlights from his book:

  • Although the right amount of sleep varies from person to person, the estimated average is between 7-9 hours for adults.
  • The ability to utilize the food we consume may be reduced by up to 33% with lack of sleep.
  • The ability to make insulin decreases with sleep deprivation.
  • The production of stress hormones increases with loss of sleep.
  • Attention, executive function, working memory, mood, logical reasoning, general math knowledge and even motor function can all be negatively affected by lack of sleep.

Conversely adequate sleep has been linked with better visual texture discrimination, better motor adaptations, and improved learning.

Getting More from Life

Our mission is to help you get more from life, to increase your BRIO, so we looked at the stress response to sleep deprivation and the effect of sleep loss on motor function.

For optimal health and fitness, to decrease pain and to promote better performance, the challenge this week is for you to evaluate your own sleep habits.  Identify where you fall short and develop ways to get the amount of sleep you deserve and need.

If you are a sleep expert, tell us how much sleep you get and ways to ensure adequate sleep.

National Senior Citizens Day

We salute our seniors today on National Senior Citizens Day

National Senior Citizens DayAs we celebrate National Senior Citizens Day, we want to recognize some of the Baudry Therapy Center and BRIO senior rockstars!

We are so blessed to work with some of the most inspirational senior clients and want to salute these fine men and women today on National Senior Citizens Day by sharing some of their life advice with you.

When asked, “what’s your secret for living a fulfilled life,” our seniors shared the following:

  • “I make sure to do some exercise everyday.” –  RL
  • “You have to have a lot of faith. I pray a lot.” – ES
  • ” You just have to pick up your big girl panties and deal with it.” –  SW
  • “I try not to worry. I just keep trusting that everything will be ok.” –  JH
  • “I read and do crossword puzzles everyday.” –  PR
  • “I stay active with my church.” –  MM
  • “I stay involved with my grandchildren and what they do.” –  EH.

What a wonderful gift to be able to work with such great people.  We encourage you to salute your favorite elder today!

About National Senior Citizens Day

National Senior Citizens Day recognizes contributions senior citizens make in communities across the United States. It is annually observed on August 21.

Some people celebrate Senior Citizens Day on August 14 as it was the day past US president Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act in 1935. However, in 1988 Ronald Reagan, who was the US president at the time, declared August 21 to be National Senior Citizens Day.

This observance was established in honor of senior citizens in the US who made positive contributions in their communities. The day was also created to bring awareness of social, health, and economic issues that affect senior citizens.
