Goal Setting – Develop the “HOW”

Goal Setting – Develop the “HOW”

goal setting: develop the howIt’s almost the New Year and you know what that means – time for resolutions and goal setting. We want to help you achieve your 2015 goals.  The last two weeks, we’ve determined How to Set SMART Goals and Finding the “WHY”.

This week we are focusing on developing the “HOW.”  Planning your strategy is integral for your success. Ask yourself, “How will I reach my SMART goal? What do I need to do each day, each week, and each month to reach my end goal.”

Here are a few steps to help develop the “How”:

  1. Make a training calendar/schedule. There are many established training programs and knowledgeable coaches who can assist you.
  2. Set your workout calendar and stick to it.
  3. Set periodic check points or mini milestones to monitor your progress.
  4. If you fall off track, don’t give up. Enlist a friend, coach or other trusted adviser to help you get back on track.
  5. Set 3 big things you must do each week to reach your goal, and do them.

Use the motivation of the WHY to figure out the HOW.  Keep up with your big 3 and keep pushing forward.

Runner’s Dynamic Warm Up

Runner’s Dynamic Warm Up

What is a dynamic warm up? Let’s start with the definition from the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

  • Dynamic – marked by continuous usually productive activity or change; marked by energy or forcefulness.
  • Warm up – to engage in preliminary exercise.
To summarize, a dynamic warm up is a preliminary exercise which is done with energy to effectively prepare the body for running. This Runner’s Dynamic Warm Up video shows a quick, to the point dynamic warm up to prepare your body for running.
Key points for your dynamic warm up:
  • Make sure to include movement in all 3 planes of motion.
    • sagittal: front and back
    • frontal: side to side
    • rotational: rotation
  • Build on your movement patterns from smaller to larger, and from less aggressive to more aggressive
  • The colder it is outside, or the less active you have been before running, the longer the warm up should be.
