As we wrap up National Physical Therapy month, we have one more PT superstar we’d like to highlight: Billy Crawford. Billy is a retired school administrator that has developed a love of tennis in his free time.

While playing tennis, Billy started experiencing pain in his R hip. The pain affected him both physically and emotionally and “upset the rhythm on his daily life” so he decided to seek out a physical therapist to find relief.

In this video, Billy shares how physical therapy has helped him eliminate pain, restore daily function, and perform better on the tennis court.

 

Warming up before you play tennis can help reduce the risk of injury. Here are a few tips for our tennis players that will help warm up your muscles before you play:

  • Get to the court about 10 minutes early.
  • Use the walk from the parking lot to the court to walk briskly to get your blood flow going.
  • Exercise the big muscle group
  • Don’t be afraid to take 2-3 laps around the court to stay loose and keep the body moving.
  • Take 5-10 practice swings (forehands and backhands) gradually increasing the length and speed of your swing.

As we continue celebrating PT month, we want to highlight another one of our physical therapy superstars: Emilie Boucvalt! Emilie is an active college student, but when knee pain kept her from running she sought out medical care.

Dr. Finstein did surgery on Emilie’s knee to improve her knee alignment and to help her regain function. He recommended physical therapy after surgery and that’s when we met Emilie. Watch her inspiring story!

Emilie’s physical therapy journey has been truly amazing. She hobbled into the BTC clinic on crutches not knowing if she would ever run again. She essentially had to learn how to walk again. Together, we customized a physical therapy program that involved regaining joint mobility and range of motion so that Emilie could reach her goals.  Now, she is working on gaining strength, trunk stability, and conditioning to get her back to running. Her goal is to run the 2016 Crescent City Classic.

Emilie’s determination, focus and goal setting is the reason she is making great progress. She truly is a PT Superstar! We can’t wait to see her running soon.

For someone like Dick Treuting, staying active is living. So when balance issues started affecting his active lifestyle, his Doctor recommended physical therapy as a solution.

Dick’s goal was to keep playing golf, a sport he’s been enjoying for over 70 years. This month we would like to highlight SportFIT superstar, Lily Labiche.  Lily is a freshman tennis player at St. Mary’s Dominican High School.  She came to BRIO in September of last year looking to take her fitness and tennis game to the next level…and she certainly did!

In 2014, Lily has won…

  • 1st place in singles girls 14’s – Level 3 – Montgomery, AL
  • 1st place in singles girls 14’s – Level 3 – Jackson, MS
  • 4 of 6 matches – Level 1 – Macon, GA
  • 1st place in singles girls 16’s – Level 4 – New Orleans, LA
  • 6 of 8 matches (MVP Louisiana) – Level 1 – Chattanooga, TN
  • 2nd place in singles girls 16’s – Level 3 – Baton Rouge, LA
  • 4th place in singles girls 14’s – Level 2 – Mobile, AL

lily3Lily utilizes her speed and quickness on the court to take the ball early and keep her opponents off balance.  Although Lily has obviously established herself as one of the top singles players in the South, she has also impressed others with her attitude and character on the court winning two Sportsmanship Awards in 2014. We are so proud of your accomplishments this year, Lily, and look forward to great things from you in 2015.  Thank you for the effort and excitement you bring to BRIO every time you train with us!

A Heartfelt PT Success Story

As we continue our celebration of National Physical Therapy month, we wanted to share with you another heartfelt PT Success Story.  When we received this email from one of our Baudry clients, we were moved by the honesty in her words and humbly honored to have had a small part in her recovery. Please read this amazing story and if you have a personal story to share, we want to hear it.  See below for contest information!

My story really started nine and a half years ago after coronary bypass surgery and two heart attacks following surgery.  Things began to happen to me slowly and I was told that it was side effects from heart surgery.  I have gone through cardiac rehab for sixty days and slowly moved on to an orthopedic and two podiatrists.  They wanted to do many strange things and I had many shots.  Then I moved into Physical Therapy for my feet and legs and still was not correctly diagnosed.  I dreaded going because it made me feel like a robot getting a tune-up.

Being a person who likes quotes, I came across one that tells you to “Pull up your big girl panties and deal with it”.  Maybe I needed to try again because things were not getting any better and I was getting slower.

I decided to see Dr. Fleming, a neurologist out of my past, and he told me that all of the things I tried to correct were caused by Parkinson’s Disease.  That was a new freckle on my brain and my brain was losing dopamine and I was left wondering what was going to happen to me.

The doctor sent me to Dr. Georgia Lea for Parkinson’s Disease and she sent me to Baudry Therapy Center for physical therapy.  I initially dreaded PT because of the obnoxious therapist I had earlier.  I remember thinking, “Lord, don’t send me to a rude snot who thinks he is great.”  I had already been there before and was dreading it, but how hard could four weeks be?

I moved on to Baudry and it was a different world.  After being evaluated, I figured Jen would be good, quiet, and friendly.  I was concerned about Rich so while he tested me, I tested him because I didn’t want someone obnoxious or snotty and I wasn’t going to be a robot.  I was needing a sense of humor and was trying to figure out this thing called BIG AND LOUD.  I said, “Well, your name is on the building, does that mean that you own this place?”   He gave me a funny answer but I will just say he had a sense of humor.  Then I said I had some questions, he said he had some answers and he sat down and provided me with a well needed conversation and I didn’t test him anymore.

A year has gone by and I am still there because I need it and I want to continue.  It has helped me with my PD life and I have learned that everyone at Baudry is special.  Therapy does not need to be dreaded; just accepted.  At Baudry, you can be yourself and they treat you like a person, not a robot.

This story is not about a contest or prize; it is about saying “Thank You, Baudry”.  After all this time, I have landed someplace spectacular and everyone is wonderful. And last but not least, I learned another quote at Baudry and it came from Rich.  He has told me many times:  “You know why you will fall —- because you don’t pick up your feet”.  I hear that even when he isn’t there.   It is true so all I can say is “OK Richard”.

Thanks to everyone at Baudry.  I tell everyone about how great you are.  You provide something great in my life.  You all are friendly and make PT and PD easier.  PT seems like a gift instead of a dreaded task.

That is my story!!!

As part of our celebration of National Physical Therapy Month, we are highlighting our clients and their stories of how physical therapy helped them overcome their pain.  Here’s a wonderful account from our client Mignon Kohnke.

I was diagnosed with a foot condition that required extensive and frequent exercise to correct it.  While my doctor was able to diagnose this, he was not able to provide any guidance as to the type of exercises I should perform to fix the problem.    Therefore, I turned to Baudry Therapy Center.

Upon arriving for my initial evaluation, I found the entire staff to be professional, courteous and timely.  My physical therapist, Kevin Dessauer, was very knowledgeable and helped  me to learn more about my condition and, specifically, what would be needed to correct it.  He explained everything to me in layman’s terms making it easy for me to understand the correct way to perform each exercise and why each was necessary.

Rich Baudry also participated throughout my therapy sessions  and worked with Kevin to determine my treatment program during each visit as well as my “homework” exercises.  My foot responded quickly to the regiment directed by Kevin and Rich and I was and am thrilled with my progress.

SportFIT Success Story: Brandon Beck

This month’s SportFIT Success Story highlights an athlete who defines BRIO with his passion, dedication, and positive mojo.

Brandon Beck came to BRIO last year to take his tennis game to the next level.  Getting into the sport late (only 3 years ago!), Brandon realized he needed to be stronger, quicker, fitter than the competition to make up for his lack of tennis experience.  After training for only a couple of months, Brandon started to notice he was already catching up with the competition.  But he didn’t stop there, he kept setting the bar higher and higher. photo3_BB

In 2014, Brandon won the Louisiana Clay Courts Boys 16’s singles title, Mississippi Hard Courts Boys 16’s doubles title, and the LHSAA State doubles title (with partner Greg Suhor).  Brandon continues to train and challenge himself daily.  He even earned the nickname “Beast Mode” after performing a 21 minute plank this summer.

Now, a junior at Jesuit High School, he looks to defend his state championship title.  We wish our Brandon the best of luck this year and a big thanks for being a part of our BRIO world!SportFIT Success Story: Brandon Beck

National Senior Citizens Day

We salute our seniors today on National Senior Citizens Day

National Senior Citizens DayAs we celebrate National Senior Citizens Day, we want to recognize some of the Baudry Therapy Center and BRIO senior rockstars!

We are so blessed to work with some of the most inspirational senior clients and want to salute these fine men and women today on National Senior Citizens Day by sharing some of their life advice with you.

When asked, “what’s your secret for living a fulfilled life,” our seniors shared the following:

  • “I make sure to do some exercise everyday.” –  RL
  • “You have to have a lot of faith. I pray a lot.” – ES
  • ” You just have to pick up your big girl panties and deal with it.” –  SW

About National Senior Citizens Day

National Senior Citizens Day recognizes contributions senior citizens make in communities across the United States. It is annually observed on August 21.

Some people celebrate Senior Citizens Day on August 14 as it was the day past US president Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act in 1935. However, in 1988 Ronald Reagan, who was the US president at the time, declared August 21 to be National Senior Citizens Day.

This observance was established in honor of senior citizens in the US who made positive contributions in their communities. The day was also created to bring awareness of social, health, and economic issues that affect senior citizens.

This month’s SportFIT Success Story highlights a true athlete who overcame back surgery to achieve her fitness goals.

Courtney Deverges came to Baudry Therapy Center in April after Dr. James Bennett performed a successful back surgery to correct her scoliosis.  Courtney progressed through her physical therapy regiment and improved tremendously. Once Courtney completed physical therapy she was ready to take another step toward reaching her fitness goals.

CD4She transitioned to a fitness program with BRIO in June and has continued to work hard and make impressive strides.

Courtney took full advantage of the many resources available to her at Baudry Therapy Center and BRIO and has proven that if you’re willing to work hard and push limits, you will get better and be able to do the things you love.  Courtney is truly a SportFIT Success Story.

Double paddle winners, Team Baudry/BRIO took 3rd place in both the People’s Choice and the Judge’s competition.

Congratulations to overall winner’s, Team Liljeberg and Team People’s Choice for their outstanding effort!

All 28 teams showed skill, talent, and endurance to make it through the event.

While enjoying everyone’s cooking and secret techniques, we found some great tips to share:

  1. Jalapeño and pineapple… Surprisingly tasty
  2.  Deanie’s crawfish mix. Nice blend of spices.
  3. Frozen orange juice. Adds a nice balance of flavors.
  4. Lemon oil/lemon zest for a more citrus flavor
  5. Captain Sid’s crawfish mix.
  6. Tabasco Sauce

Other surprisingly good additions:

  1. Sweet potatoes… yum!
  2. Brussel Sprouts … yes, very good, but beware of eating too many!
  3. Artichoke … good, but tricky to get right.

Patient Success Story: Diane Killeen

photo of Dianne Killeen - patient success storyI thought my knees were doomed. Although I am very active, my knees would freeze and become stiff on a daily basis. They were swollen and I was always in pain. My grandmother had arthritis so I just assumed I was in for it, too.

After my initial consultation, Rich said he was confident that I could have pain-free knees and avoid surgery. I signed up that same day. After a few weeks of diligence, work and expert guidance – I was a new person – the pain was alleviated.

My HUGE knees looked normal! My first exclamation was “I have knees!” and ordered all in ear-shot to take a look. My mother was so excited that we had to meet up just so she could see for herself. My boyfriend was shocked because he had never seen me without the huge rounded knee joints. He actually stopped in at Baudry Therapy Center and spotted me across the room and on impulse said, “wow, you can see your knee caps!!!!”

At Baudry Therapy Center, I learned how muscle groups work and why my knees were failing. The exercises and biweekly visits gave me the tools I needed to strengthen and correct years of misuse. The entire team at Baudry Therapy is knowledgeable and pleasant which makes all the difference in the world when you are faced with physical pain. The facility is serene and gives a spa-like feeling while in a medical setting. It completes the experience. I have and will continue to recommend Baudry Therapy Center to everyone. It works!
